William Day, President. Bill and his wife, Cheryl, have their 155 acres near Hotchkiss in a conservation easement with the Black Canyon Land Trust.  They have lived in Ouray and Delta Counties since 1986, and have been involved with BCLT since 2000.  Bill is a retired Professional Land Surveyor, and currently works monitoring breeding bird populations for the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory.  Bill Day Contact Bill.

Steve Boyle

Elaine Brett, Vice President. Elaine is a management and organization development consultant with experience in field management, strategic planning, and organizational change.  Following a career in medical diagnostics at Eastman Kodak, Johnson & Johnson, and Idexx Laboratories, she has settled in Hotchkiss, Colorado as an independent consultant for both for-profit and non-profit groups.  In addition to serving on the Black Canyon Land Trust board, Elaine is currently President of the Board of Directors of the Western Colorado Food and Ag Council, Chair of the Leroux Creek Area Planning Committee, and director of Citizens for Animal Welfare and Shelter (CAWS).  She has an M.S. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Maryland, as well as Certificates in Organization Development and Change Leadership from Georgetown University.  Having lived most of her life in urban areas, Elaine is excited about the opportunity to be a part of BCLT's efforts to conserve open lands for present and future generations. Ed Page, Treasurer. In addition to Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Animal Science, Ed has a Ph.D. in Rangeland Resources with emphasis in watershed ecology & management; social, political, and administrative aspects of resource management; and policy development.  Ed has extensive professional and business experience with agricultural operations.  During the late 1970s and early 1980s, he worked for Oregon State University as an area livestock and pasture agent.  Following which, he served as Owner and Manager of Western Oregon Sheep Ranching and Western Agricultural Management Company (in Oregon and Arizona).  Ed has been President and Manager of the Western Agricultural Marketing Company, providing export to Japan.  Prior to his current position through the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension for sustaining local agricultural and environmental resources, Ed was the Executive Director of the Northwest Business Council for Sustainable Businesses, Communities, and Ecosystems. Ed's goals are to strengthen local communities, their food systems, and the agriculture that support them.  The imperative in this is to work within ecological limits while creating sustainable human communities.  Ed has taken the opportunity to promote just that by joining the BCLT board!  Edward Page Contact Ed.

Joe Carlson, Secretary. Joe was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota but has lived in Colorado for 37 years. He and his wife Debbie have been married for 12 years, and have two children: Peter who is 7, and Hannah who is 5. They live on a 400+ acre family orchard in Eckert, of which a little more than half of the property is currently under easement with BCLT.  Joe graduated from Aspen High School and St. Lawrence University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. Professionally he has been a Financial Advisor for 15 years, and currently works for Edward Jones Investments in Delta. In the past, Joe’s volunteer roles include serving as President of the Delta Rotary Club, and a board member of the Delta County Memorial Hospital Foundation. In his free time, Joe’s hobbies include alpine skiing, snow shoeing, hiking, camping, golfing, and engaging in all activities of his children.  Joe Carlson Contact Joe.

Elaine Brett

Aaron Clay, Board Member. Aaron was raised in Hotchkiss, Colorado.  He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1975 (Boettcher Scholar) and the University of Colorado School of Law in 1979 (Order of the Coif). Aaron has practiced law as a general practitioner in Delta for 25 years, with emphasis on real estate, business planning, and estate planning.  Aaron has also been the Water Referee for Division 4 since 1982.  Each spring he teaches a one-day course in basic water law at the local technical college. In addition to practicing law, Aaron has been active volunteering in the field for many years.  Some of his activities include: the pro bono coordinator for Delta County Bar Association, on the Board of Directors of the Colorado Lawyer Trust Account Foundation, Board of Continuing Legal Education in Colorado, Inc., and on the board of Lend-a-Lawyer (subsidiaries of the Colorado Bar Association), as well as being Vice-President on the Colorado Bar Association Board of Governors. He also helped establish the 7th Judicial District Access to Justice Committee, where he still holds a seat.  Aaron has a long history with Land Trust operations, as he was secretary and board member of Three Rivers Land Trust for six years, and is a past board president of Black Canyon Land Trust.  Aaron Clay Contact Aaron.

William Day

Pete Eastman, Board Member. Pete joined the Black Canyon Land Trust Board of Directors in 2006.  He is an orchardist on Rogers Mesa near Hotchkiss.  He runs the family farm planted by his father in 1960, a few months after the family moved to the Hotchkiss are from Woodside, California in 1959.  Pete got to know BCLT in 2004 while he helped his mother put that family property into a conservation easement.  He strongly believes in keeping farm land in farming, and growing houses where one cannot grow crops!  Pete Eastman Contact Pete.

Christine Keller, Board Member. With a B.A. in Sociology, and a Master’s in Geography (with emphasis in conservation of environmental quality), Christine has been an environmental consultant since 1973.  During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Christine was president of Keller environmental Associates, Inc.  In 1988, she became a Principal/Partner in View Point West and still remains. Christine has managed over 85 large-scale programs for meeting the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and related legislations.  She has prepared environmental compliance documents including: state and federal Environmental Impact Reports (EIRs) and Environmental Impact Statements (EISs), Exhibit Es for submittal to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Proponents’ Environmental Assessments (PEAs) for submittal to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), and Notices of Intention (NOIs) and Applications for Certification (AFCs) for submittal to the California Energy Commission (CEC).  Representative types of projects managed by Christine include transmission lines, power generation facilities, landfills, highways, pipelines, and water reclamation facilities.  In addition to managing environmental compliance programs, Christine provides expert witness services for various clients, and is responsible for the developing and planning public participation programs, and conducting visual analyses. Bob Koehler, Board Member. Bob has practiced law in Colorado for over thirty years.  Since receiving his Juris Doctor in 1971, he practiced mostly civil and administrative law in the Denver area.  Bob has reached professional proficiency in Spanish, as his clientele was largely Spanish speaking.  Bob participated in the Peace Corps a volunteer and instructor between 1963 and 1967.  He served in Latin American with the community development program building schools, roads, health and savings cooperatives, water aqueducts, and other projects. In addition to serving internationally, Bob has done much to serve the communities he’s lived in. He has been a member of the Denver Youth Employment Service, the Raptor Education Foundation, St. Anne’s Episcopal School (board chairman), and is currently serving as Treasurer of the Crawford Community Library Service Foundation. Nomi Gray, Board Member. Nomi Gray has lived on Redlands Mesa, located west of Hotchkiss, for 35 years, where she raises poultry, organic fruit and vegetables, and assists her husband in his ornamental ironwork business. She placed 92 acres under a conservation easement which is held by Black Canyon Land Trust. After many years working in agriculture and social services, she switched her focus to land use planning, and was the City Planner for the City of Delta for 13 years, until 2004. Currently she operates Plan It Earth LLC, a land use planning consultation business.
